Background

Ms. Yow completed a dual Biomedical and Electrical Engineering degree at the University of Southern California and began working on electro-optic semiconductors at TRW. While there, she also completed her Masters degree in electro-optics through the Distance Learning program at USC. She then combined this unique training to work on laser-tissue interaction at the Beckman Laser Institute at UCI. This led her to spend 12 years at Coopervision/Alcon Labs designing and evaluating ophthalmic surgical devices. Her time spent in the operating room observing new devices also allowed her to function as a scrub nurse in cataract surgeries in third world countries.

With an interest in new product development, she undertook an executive MBA in Healthcare and IT at University of California, Irvine. She then joined a classmate to form a start-up medical device firm in Ob/Gyn using venture capital. She holds 3 medical device patents.

Ms Yow is now the project manager of the Department of Energy Artificial Retina Project, coordinating the efforts of six national labs and four universities. She is happy to say that every thing she has learned since high school is applicable to her job.

She is an American Academy of Underwater Sciences (AAUS) scientific diver and a volunteer exhibit diver for the Aquarium of the Pacific in Long Beach, CA.
